In 1503, on a journey, led by Amerigo Vespucci himself, Amerigo and his crew sailed in two ships
( 80 men on each) to the south eastern coast of South America. They went along the coast and visited places such as,
Cape Soo Roque, Guanabara Bay, Rio de la Plata , Cape Santo Agostinho, San Julian, and spotted the Falkland Islands. They
returned to Spain in 1504 and told their story to mapmakers to put on the maps. A German mapmaker named Martain Waldseemuller
was one of the first to believe that Amerigo was the first European to find the "New World," and suggested they call this
place America. Soon the name was used throughout Europe and eventually used officially in the naming of the continent.
IMPORTANT
Amerigo Vespucci did not land on the " New World." Vespucci explored the east
coast of South America and saw the " New World." When Vespucci returned to Spain he told
map makers what they and Christopher Columbus thought was Asia was really new land.
